Although relatively unknown as a pet, the Plott Hound is a very old hunting hound. The original ancestors, a wide variety of boar-hunting hounds, moved from Germany to the United States with immigrant Jonathan Plott in 1850. His dedicated breeding program eventually created the dog that bears his name. Many of these dogs still accompany and assist hunters, but are rarely kept as pets since they require a tremendous amount of space and exercise.
Loosely regarded in the Coonhound category for its skill at chasing large game and participating in the sport of raccoon hunting, the Plott Hound is eligible to compete in hunting field trials, though not in conformation.
IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS
Size: Males and Females ideally 22 inches (at the withers).
Appearance: Muscular, firm, athletic body with strong motion.
Coat and Color: Short, tight, shiny coat. Brindle coloring most common, though "saddled brindle" (black with brindle legs) and smoke blue also accepted.
Head: Flat, broad skull with a long, wedged muzzle; dark eyes; large, flat, low ears.
